Hello, my name is Gill and I am... slim!

Sorry about all the typos yesterday, clearly a case of brain fade.
Well, "Life of Pi" was worth a watch, though did mean that I went bed later than I would like.
Had a sort out in the dry foods cupboard this morning and had several odds and ends to use up, including the odd date or two, the last of last years cobnuts, one piece of crystallised ginger... you get the idea. I decided to make a fruit cake and add  a packet of Lidl mixed fruit to bulk it up. I then realised that I had no eggs - Yes I know I have a flock of chickens, but this week from up to 50 birds I have had 6 eggs !!! it is verging on catastrophic.
So off I went to Googleland to find an eggless fruit cake recipe. 3 cakes now in the oven and I have no idea what they will be like, will let you know how they come out and give the recipe if it is worth it.
Some more sage and onion stuffing made today from crust from the last couple of days and a home made loaf that had gone dry (and we have no meals with toast planned)

I have been reading lots of posts, some of which I guess might be inspired by Frugal Queens latest blogs about loosing weight and exercise and also quite a lot about meals for those who are wheat intolerant. So here is where I have to make an announcement, somewhat along the lines of that made at the beginning of an AA meeting, which is ....... I don't have a weight problem, unless wanting to put weight on is a problem! I don't need to exercise or go to the gym, because I don't keep still long enough and even when "resting" my feet are twitching and I have absolutely no allergies or intolerances -of the food variety at least- I have plenty of the other! Now clearly I am no expert on diets, but for what it is worth, I have made an observation which I think might explain a teensy part of weight gain in SOME....
Before I retired I worked for many years in teams made up entirely of women. Many of these women were on diets -all the time! I know all about cabbage diets, banana diets, that disgusting Atkins diet, you name it I have heard about it. ( not too much about eat less and get off your arse more diet it has to be said) I would occasionally go out for a meal as a team building sort of thing, those who know me know I don't like going out for meals, but in the interests of the team - no problem. Sooooo to my point! (at last you say) Without exception those who struggled with their weight  hardly spoke during their meal as they were too busy eating. Head down, forkful into mouth before the last forkful had been chewed and swallowed. The cutlery never left their hand even if they stopped eating to have a sip of a drink. The skinny minnies amongst the group, talked and talked (too much?) and, gesticulating, waved a loaded fork in the air for minutes before finally eating something. The skinny minnies often left a little bit of food on their plate too.
I suppose I will get an awful lot of flack for this. You will say it is alright for me to be smug and judge, but believe me, I am neither smug nor judgemental.I am relating observations I have made. (and yes I know many people have a medical reason for weight problems, I'm not discussing them)
I am SO going to regret this post! oooh er! What have I done?
All for now off to squeeze some chickens as i'm desperate for eggs (joke)

  1. Lol, I find your post funny not offensive. I would love to lose weight but due to genuine health and mobility problems it doesn't burn off even if I deny myself. I used to get uptight now I don't, I know unless I wake up one morning miraculously healed I'm not getting slimmer. Even the latest to hit me, cancer, isn't making a difference I think I'm a lost cause unless I have a 6 mth stay at a plastic surgeons home and let him practice on me.
Just checking this for typos I just need to add I'm not ginormous :0).
I'm now going to read more of your blog you make me smile. I must add I've got the image in my head of you stood in the chicken run gently squeezing your chicks whilst reciting you know you have an egg, you do have an egg up there lol.

    Enjoy your weekend

  2. I think you need new chickens! From our 130 ish we got about 53 dozen last week!! They are hybrid layers ranging from about 2 years old down to the 24 POL that we got in August.

  3. I don't find your post offensive and l do know the sort of people you mean. Once went away on holiday with two skinny and one rather large lady and she never stopped eating. Big dinners, chocolates, icecream, the list goes on and l was stunned. It it not always the case though. It is VERY important not to just assume that someone is a big eater and just watches telly from the sofa. I cannot get slim again nomatter what l do. It is partly my cronic illness and partly hormones the doctor says, weight varies from week to week. I have also lost 80 % of my taste which is really sad and makes food very uninteresting. Anyways, l am a great fan of being as mobile as one is able to, eating healthy and not junk, and staying far away from all the silly diets. Love who you are, skinny or not. I am not very big but far from skinny. Good luck with your eggs ;-). Pam

  5. too right sister! I never met a fat person yet who was mobile most of the time and ate healthily and the right amount all of the time. I was fat because my portions were too large. I am totally aware that I need to exercise daily to sweating to keep slim. Good for you girl and stay slim and healthy xxxx

  6. Hi Gill,
My words exactly! It takes me back to my days in the office, everyone else going to Weight Watchers and I was (and still am at 57) thin because I ate less and moved more. The birthday cakes would come around and they would be stuffing their faces. Everywhere you look these days there are enormous fat people, especially women, how will the NHS cope with all their health problems, diabetes, high blood pressure, etc., just because they can't control what goes in their mouths and can't get off their asses!
I admire you Gill for writing this post, sorry couldn't resist adding my 'two pence worth'.

    1. Your two pence worth is much appreciated.! Did you notice how quickly people eat ? I think it might help folk who are watching their weight to eat more slowly and take a break between mouthfuls. I think you feel fuller that way - I do anyway!
Nice to see you here Willow

  7. Why is it that we feel bad when we tell the truth? Of course people are overweight because they eat too much; it's obvious. I am slightly overweight because I love eating (although I'm now on the 5:2 fast diet, and have lost quite almost a stone without any fuss).

BTW; I haven't had a single egg from my TWO hens for about a month.

    1. A friend of mine has lost over two stone on the 5:2 fast diet. He really has done well on it, whilst other diets haven't worked for him. I think the way he can still have his real ale has helped!
