Lentil Burgers and Dahl recipes

Here is my recipe for lentil burgers - I am using gramms although I'm more confident with pounds and ounces!
In a pint of veg stock ( 2 x veg oxo cubes) cook 150gs orange lentils until soft.
While these are cooking, finely chop an onion and finely grate a carrot and a stick of celery,
When lentils are cooked strain well.  (squeeze out excess juice)
Combine all ingredients with 50gs porridge oats, pinch of garlic granules and salt and pepper to taste.
divide the mixture into 4 patties and fry in a (very) little oil, about 4-5mins on each side.
I serve this with coleslaw on bread cobs/buns/rolls/baps -  whatever they are called in different parts of this country !
The herbs and spices can be changed to suit different tastes . They are good with a paprika or curry flavour or you could add parsley, sage etc.

Here is my basic recipe for a lentil dahl

In a pint of veg stock ( as above) cook a 200g orange lentils. for 5 mins
While this is cooking soften onion, carrot and celery in a little oil.
Add a tablespoon of  Garam Masala and a good pinch of garlic powder.
Strain the lentils, keeping the juice, and add to the softened vegetables.
Add half a tin of chopped tomatoes and cook for 10 minutes, gradually adding the juice from the lentils, until the texture is as you wish
Add salt and pepper to taste. Cook for a further 5 minutes.

This recipe is using the ingredients I have at my disposal during my 4 week Frugal Challenge. Outside of this challenge I might also add spinach in the final few minutes and be a little more creative with my spices.

Hope these make sense
Gill

    1. It's a good way to thicken while adding goodness isn't it?

  3. I've never gotten the hang of grams....we still use ounces and pounds. Of course, I also cook using a pinch of this and a bit of that kind of way...lol

Brown lentils are all I can find here. Would they substitute okay? I'd love to try my hand at the burgers.

    1. Brown lentils will do as well. I always cook them a little longer. Good Luck with them.
Regarding measurements, I keep changing from ounces to pinches to teaspoons and cups! I am not use to using or giving instructions and hardly ever stick to a recipe. I bet blogland are despairing of me.

    2. I was taught to cook that way so I can actually deal more with recipes that are a concept than I can with exacts...lol. Definitely going to try the brown lentils.

  5. Hi - I just saw a link to the lentil burger recipe on Shara's blog and will definitely be giving it a try. I am always looking for new ways to use lentils in place of meat and am beginning to get a good selection of recipes. Thanks. Lily.
