Survivors!

Okay, who was it that commented that  "Survivors" was on utube?
I have since spent many hours watching the first then the second and now I'm on the third series ! For goodness sake, I don't have time for this new obsession. The tomatoes are still growing and ripening, The barrowfulls of apples are needing processing, there are onions to be strung and I'm rushing through it all to grab an hour on the computer to watch another episode.
I am so enjoying the 1970s clothes  - which are all remarkably clean, sparkling white and ironed, not bad considering they are making their own soap with mutton fat and wood ash!  There are also taps working in a farm that has no running water, and a few other bloopers. HOWEVER, It's great!, just as I remembered it. I particularly like the music that accompanies the opening titles and then the closing credits and NOTHING IN  BETWEEN! yes really! I can hear people being upset without the help of mournful cellos and running without a jingly form of William Tell and pastoral music as the camera spans the countryside. Those were the days. Why do we need music to accompany everything, as a sort of clue to those who hadn't realised what was happening?
There are some very posh people and some more posh people who have attempted to master un-posh accents, but the message is remarkably modern and relevant.
The program was first aired between 1975 and 78 I believe. It was then re-done fairly recently, but the new version did not hold my interest and was very DRAMATIC (totally unnecessary)

So that is my excuse for being too busy to blog... I have been watching an old TV series !
Back soon with a more sensible post.

A very warm Derbyshire welcome to Gilly Ann Travis and Michelle Brownshill  on Bloglovin and Wintersend Warbler and Jackie Philips on the Follower bar.
love Gillxx

  1. I don't know anything about this programme, and am wary about looking on YouTube (as I could become obsessed). Maybe I'll have a quick butcher's anyway.

    1. It will take you back to the tank top and flairs time!

  2. Just loved those accents, and the ability to turn up either in a sports car or helicopter, now that's slumming it. Only watched a few, doesn't half go on, but the plot is good, kill off most of the people so you don't have the 'walking dead' to deal with.

    1. When we watched it the first time, we were intrigued by the self-sufficiency stuff, now days (after 35 years of smallholding) I am more taken with the socio-political stuff!

  3. I loved that programme, and was gutted when I moved from Winchester to the northwest in 1976 and found that it wasn't being shown up here! I'm going to have to be very firm with myself and not look for it on youtube until decorating the hall and stairs is finished.

    1. You have been warned it's compulsive viewing from all sorts of angles, not the least in the production, which is so unlike that now days.

  4. Me! And yes, it takes over your life!

  5. What I noticed was how slowly things were played out. Situations which would be sketched in in seconds in today's dramas played out over three or four minutes.
I also noticed the clothes, and the immaculate hair cuts! How Charles and Greg managed to look like the wild men of Borneo when Jenny's on trend crop was eternally maintained!
I'm slowing down toward the end of series 3, it's getting a bit bonkers, but the first two were un-put-downable!

    1. I agree series 3 is not as good. Something that I am enjoying is seeing bit part actors that are now quite famous. I loved seeing Brian Blessed in one episode (he is president of our canal society so I have a special interest)

    1. You have been warned ! You will either find it irritating or get hooked like me, I suspect the latter as you will put yourself in their shoes and work out how you could overcome the difficulties.

  7. I didn't know you could get old programmes on Youtube. In fact I don't know anything at all about Youtube.
I agree with you about the music in dramas/films, it is really off-putting. It takes my enjoyment out of watching.

    1. Sometimes I can't hear the dialogue for the music. it's as though they think we need help to undestand what is going on, or have the concentration span of a gnat or something. Whatever it is totally unnecessary.

    2. If you haven't used utube it is always worth looking up "how to" videos on anything about smallholding/ self sufficiency/ prepping etc.

  8. Sometimes we do get wrapped up in old TV shows that we haven't seen in a while-the 70's clothes were great, weren't they?
And, yes, I've got squirrels taking my pecans and burying them to have for winter food. Oh well, I'm grateful to be able to help, but sometimes they bury them in my flower pots, and I have to dig them out. Have a great day!

  9. Hi Suzanne
I just love the tank tops. I knitted lots in the 70s and ponchos too!
There is not a single cob nut or sloe left now! Grrr.

  10. Good ol' YouTube! We've been watching old "One Step Beyond" there lately. It's our Sunday evening relaxation.
