I can’t explain it. I don’t think there is an explanation. It makes me want to switch off from the world even more!
No. And it won't, it will make it all ten times worse.J x
If it were not for the fact he is serious, it would be funny.
How do you stop a gunman killing loads of people? Get more guns!! (of course!!). Unbelievable. I'm glad we don't live in the USA.
I left the UK for the USA and LOVE it here in California. Have lived here for 35 years with my ex-policeman husband AND a closet full of GUNS. Yes, we have assault rifles, shotguns, hand guns, you name it. My husband refuses to lose his marksmanship. Do we go out and shoot people? Of course not. Do we knife people in the street or throw acid in their faces? NO!! The UK has more than its share of social problems. Guns don't kill people. PEOPLE kill people. The UK has one of the highest rates of DUI in Europe. Do you talk about banning cars and booze? Of course not. Some family members who live up in Canada just returned from a trip to the UK and are so glad to be home. They said the standard of driving there in the UK is akin to madness .... so, don't believe everything you read, try to stay rational. If the USA was as bad as your (our) british media would like you to think, we wouldn't have so many problems with people who have arrived here illegally. Everyone wants to live here but propaganda would like you brits to stay 'safe and sound' in your tiny houses, taxed to the hilt without a pot to pee in. I know because I lived it. Life is great here and I would not live anywhere else, certainly not back in the UK that's for darn sure!Having said that, I don't know that there is a solution for the crazies who think it's OK to go shoot up a school full of children. It has become a case of copy cat. I am sorry for the parents who send their kids to school every day, wondering if those kids are going to be safe. Guns are easy to get hold of and do a lot of damage. They will NEVER be able to remove all the guns from the citizens because someone somewhere will always be able to get their hands on a gun if they wait/try long enough. There is supposedly a gun ban in the UK but guess what? My own father has an unregistered gun hidden in the attic, at least one that I know of. My point is, it only takes ONE. One gun plus one crazy. What is to be done about the crazy?? That is the question that needs to be answered. Arming teachers with weapons is RIDICULOUS. There is talk of building schools like prisons and stationing Security guards at the gates. I think that is the best that can be done at this point.
Your father has a hidden gun in his attic; you have a closet full; legally held. I know who I'd prefer as a neighbour. Your view of the UK is not mine. Having said that I've lived in France for 45 years.
As Tom says, it would be funny, but that man has his finger on the destruct button for us all. Catriona
Speaking as a teacher, I find the idea utterly appalling. The potential for these guns to be stolen and used in the school is so obvious.
This "president" is a rancid self-serving moron funded by the NRA (which also controls the Congress and most State legislatures). No good will come of this. The sooner this administration is removed the better.
I was stunned when I heard this. It's a real indication of how out of line the thinking is. As an ex teacher, the thought that I would be expected to be 'turned to' in a desperate situation and have to make a split second life or death decision is utterly wrong.
Guns are never the answer. saw on TV that the primary age children in the States are being taught to run round the room throwing books and paper to distract the shooter for 10 secs to help other classes to run.....
I have no words for what I heard.
All I can say is I am glad I never was a teacher in the US and that I am retired from teaching anyway. If they do that then surely they are going to have gun battles in the classroom and I really can't see how that will help anybody.
I don't think arming teachers is a good idea. I think a better way to go is to have armed police at the schools, like they are doing in one of the townships here in New Jersey. Or maybe well vetted and trained ex-servicemen who are armed. I don't want to have to buy my kids bullet proof backpacks.
I am an American and I left USA to bring up my children in the UK about 30 years ago because they would be safe from gun violence. When I first moved to England even the police did not carry guns! the death rate from gun violence is 10 fold that of the UK. How many people die from guns in the UK this year like 5 and in America in the thousands. Guns are the problem, the availability of guns. And the politicians who are ruled and owned by the NRA. I am back in America now, this country is very beautiful and expansive but we have a huge problem, quite a few actually and guns are one of them!
To begin, I have never commented here before. I do read your blog from time to time. I am a mom and grandma in the US.This world has fallen so far. Media is in the bag for the progressives, and if you cling to your guns and your God they revile you. When we take God out of just about everything and rip the 10 Commandments off walls, allow people to murder their unborn children, and don't do anything to stop the pervasive (and addicting) filth of pornography, it's no wonder crazy people do what they do. Not to mention parents who never grew up enough to be real parents to their children and the endless pursuit of money and possessions. Add to that the obsession with cell phones, the Internet, Facebook, celebrities. Don't forget the over-prescribing of anti-depressants and psychiatric drugs, along with prescription and illegal drug addiction.Arming teachers and staff who have interest in doing so, have been thoroughly screened and trained, and who carry concealed in an anonymous fashion would be a major deterrent. Even the crazies know that our schools are gun free zones, so if they get in, they can do tons of damage.Years back I had a boss who said the reason that the terrorists don't do so much here in the US is that they have no way to know who is carrying a concealed weapon. He had a good point.
Jo, I totally agree with all you said , and it iseemed definitely people who kill and not guns. I have lived in Northern Ireland through the troubles and we have unbelievably tight gun controls, but the country was awash with illegal firearms.
All schools with be changed into Far West Saloon bars, and shoot-outs between teachers and pupils will follow any poor exam results.
When the children at Dunblane school, Scotland were murdered, in the aftermath, our government looked at gun laws and changed them, tightened all rules, and whilst our gun clubs were not totally happy they complied. Yes guns can still be got here illegally, but we do not have the high figures of gun crime. You can not stop every gun crime, but you can stop these young people students/ex-students so freely walking into education premises with weapons.
I'm sure that if teachers are armed, there WILL be an incident when the teacher finally has enough and will kill some student who has given then grief over a long time span. It's a really, really stupid idea from a seriously demented POTUS. It's almost as stupid as the NRA propaganda such as "guns don't kill people, people kill people" and "it's not a gun problem it's a mental health problem". The US has turned crazy in recent decades.
